    Indeed Provides Resources and Best Practices for Hiring Refugees

    Feb 23, 2023 | Indeed

    AUSTIN, TX (February 23, 2023) – At Indeed, our mission is to help people get jobs, and one of our ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) goalsTo an external site is to help 30 million job seekers facing barriers, including displaced workers, get hired by 2030.

    For the nearly 8 million Ukrainians who have been forced to flee their homes and rebuild their lives, finding employment is one of the toughest hurdles. One year after Russia’s invasion, Indeed is providing lessons learned, resources, and best practices for employers who want to tap into this talent pool and help bring refugees back into the workforce.

    Tips for employers open to hiring refugees and migrants:

    • Think about only including the skills necessary to do the job. If you don’t, you risk overstacking the language requirements and eligibility criteria, which might screen out high-quality candidates.

    • Be mindful not to reject a candidate just because they seem overqualified.

    • Partner with local or national organizations providing aid to refugees.

    “At Indeed, we want to help employers understand and mitigate the challenges refugees face while playing our part to equip job seekers with support to overcome them,” says Parisa Fatehi-Weeks, Indeed’s senior director of Social Impact Programs and Partnerships. “Working with our partners like the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and UNHCR over the past year, we know there is a clear correlation between gainful employment and improved outcomes for refugees. Too many migrant job seekers have trouble finding work because of barriers that are built into the hiring process.”

    As part of Indeed’s efforts, job searches in Poland and Germany using the Ukrainian language version of Indeed increased rapidly, peaking at 1.5% of site traffic in Poland in early 2022. In addition, Indeed’s Ukrainian language Career GuideTo an external site content has garnered 45,500 views and employer FAQs on how to hire refugees has had over 10,000 views.

    In other steps toward achieving Indeed’s global ESG goals, Indeed has partnered with organizations like the Tent Partnership for Refugees, IRC and UNHCR to help displaced people find work. Highlights of work that came from these partnerships includes:

    • Held multiple hiring events in Poland for Ukrainian refugees, resulting in over 1,200+ interviews and more than 600 job offers;

    • Updated products in Poland and Germany to have Ukrainian translations easily accessible;

    • Set up support pages for employers in FranceTo an external site, GermanyTo an external site, IrelandTo an external site, ItalyTo an external site, PolandTo an external site and the UKTo an external site with guidance on attracting and employing refugee workers;

    • Created Career GuidesTo an external site for Ukrainians looking for jobs in a new country;

    • Worked with the Refugee Services of Texas to host a hiring event in Austin for refugees and special immigrant visa holders from Afghanistan and distributed laptops, mobile hotspots, and Lyft rides to refugee job seekers;

    • Kicked off a partnership with the German-based organization KironTo an external site, which provides free online courses to refugees and underserved communities. As the country with the largest refugee population in Europe, we look forward to deepening our partnerships in Germany to support refugees there.

    “The world has coalesced around supporting refugees from Ukraine this year, and the business community is no exception,” said Noni Rossini, VP for Europe at the Tent Partnership for Refugees. “Tent is proud to work with businesses – including Indeed – to connect Ukrainians to job opportunities. These jobs are not only giving Ukrainians a chance to provide for their families, but, in the face of so much uncertainty, they are restoring a much-needed sense of stability, financial security, and community for the people of Ukraine.”
