A step toward more equitable, diverse, and inclusive companies
Diversity and inclusion (D&I) are important factors that job seekers consider when evaluating companies and job offers. To appeal to quality talent, employers must develop and implement comprehensive D&I policies that support employees. On September 30, 2020, Glassdoor, the worldwide leader on insights about jobs and companies, launched a set of new product features that deliver greater transparency around the current state of diversity, equity, and inclusion of individual companies.
Job Seekers Have Little Visibility Into Existing Inequities at Companies
The D&I workplace survey* that Glassdoor conducted in the U.S. in August 2020 revealed a harsh reality. Nearly half of Black (47%) and Hispanic (49%) employees have quit a job after witnessing or experiencing discrimination at work, significantly higher than the amount of white (38%) employees that have done the same. Under such circumstances, it's no surprise that 76% of all employees and job seekers report that a diverse workforce is an important factor when evaluating companies and job offers. This sentiment is even higher among Black (80%), Hispanic (80%) and LGBTQ* (79%) job seekers and employees. In fact, 32% of all job seekers, 41% of Black job seekers, and 41% of LGBTQ job seekers would not apply to a job at a company that lacks a diverse workforce.
The survey also identified a high demand for employee reviews, as 66% of job seekers trust employees over senior leaders (19%), company websites (9%) and recruiters (6%) when it comes to representing the state of an employer's D&I performance. Glassdoor offers millions of job listings and a growing database of company reviews, CEO approval ratings, salary reports, interview reviews and questions, benefits reviews, and more. Although Glassdoor users are encouraged to comment on D&I at current and former employers, until now, they could not express their D&I reviews as numerical ratings, nor could they easily search for D&I reviews of specific companies.
"It was a natural next step for us to introduce a feature to make it easier for job seekers to quickly assess potential employers based on D&I," said Annie Pearl, Glassdoor chief product officer. "We are launching these new products to deliver on what our users have been asking of us-more transparency around D&I within companies. Now was the right time to bring a deeper level of transparency to jobs and companies and we're not done yet."

Employer Diversity Story:
Company profiles also now feature a dedicated section that highlights the D&I programs, initiatives, and strategies employers are undertaking.
With these new features, users can evaluate the current state of D&I at different companies and employers can describe their D&I efforts.
Companies Can Help Create a More Equitable Society
"There is immense power in the collective voice as a means for change," said Pearl. "By inviting employees and job seekers to anonymously share their experiences on Glassdoor, we are helping millions of people to navigate their careers and encouraging others to share their opinions without fear of retaliation."
These new tools are a small push in the direction of more equitable companies, which will ripple out to create a more equitable society. To create a workplace where everyone feels valued and respected, employers must express their commitment to D&I and evolve in response to employee feedback.
"By providing this next level of transparency on Glassdoor, we're also helping employers and employees alike to stay accountable and committed to creating better, more equitable workplaces. Everyone deserves the opportunity to thrive in their workplace," said Pearl.
